Even the cleanest, most perfectly sloped eavestrough is useless if your downspouts drop water directly beside your building's foundation. Water discharging within 2 feet of a basement wall quickly soaks down, putting immense hydrostatic pressure on concrete footings and causing basement seepage.

We fit flip-up hinged extensions that carry water 6 or more feet away from your foundation — allowing you to fold them up out of the way when mowing the lawn or clearing winter snow.

How far is far enough? Six feet is the working minimum on a typical Central Alberta lot, but the real answer depends on your grade. If the ground slopes back toward the house, as it does on many older Red Deer properties where soil has settled against the foundation over decades, an extension that stops at six feet simply delivers the water to a low point that drains straight back. We check the grade during the walkthrough and extend to a point that actually sheds water away, or recommend regrading where an extension alone cannot solve it.

Downspout sizing matters as much as placement. A standard 2"x3" downspout is adequate for most residential runs, but it becomes a bottleneck on steep roofs, metal roofing, long unbroken runs, and any building where one outlet serves a large drainage area. A 3"x4" downspout carries roughly double the cross-sectional area, and it passes spruce cones and poplar seed clumps that would lodge in the smaller elbow and start a clog. On heavily treed lots the larger size reduces blockages regardless of rainfall.

Alberta winters put specific demands on downspout hardware. Discharge points freeze, extensions get buried under snow and cracked by shovels, and cheap corrugated plastic goes brittle at deep-cold temperatures and splits. We install formed aluminum in colours matched to your existing trim, anchored with secure wall straps rather than friction-fit connections that work loose during freeze-thaw cycling. Where discharge routinely ices up, the answer is usually an upsized outlet and corrected trough slope rather than heat cable, which manages the symptom and adds a power bill every winter.

For properties where surface extensions are impractical — tight lot lines in Blackfalds, landscaped frontages, or high-traffic walkways — we can tie downspouts into buried drainage carrying water to a daylight outlet or a dry well well clear of the building. We will tell you plainly when a simple hinged extension does the same job for a fraction of the cost.
